Scholarships for the Graduate Program in Economics and Finance at CEMFI
February 1, 2010
Job Description : Scholarship up to EUR 10,000 per year offered for students of Graduate Program in Economics and Finance at CEMFI, Madrid
THE MASTER IN ECONOMICS AND FINANCE AT CEMFI is a 2-year full-time program intended to prepare students for a wide range of careers in the public and the private sectors. It also serves as the first two years of the PhD in Economics at CEMFI. This flexibility is very attractive to many students that initially are not sure whether they would like to follow a professional or an academic track. The program is taught in English.
The distinctive feature of the program is the combination of an orientation towards applied and policy issues with a strong emphasis on analytical and quantitative approaches to these issues. This requires a solid understanding of the relevant economic, econometric, and computational techniques. The faculty teaching the courses are all active researchers at the frontier of their area of expertise. About 25 students are enrolled each year, which allows for close interaction with CEMFI’s faculty.
The Master in Economics and Finance at CEMFI is an official degree granted by Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP) according to the regulations of the Spanish Ministerio de Educación.
Each academic year is divided into three 10-week terms. Courses are concentrated in the first five terms, with three courses per term. Each course comprises three hours of lectures and one and a half hours of problem set classes per week. The sixth term is fully devoted to research work on the Master thesis that students must submit at the end of the program. In addition, a 2-week introductory course of Mathematics is taught in September of the first year.
The first two terms contain the core courses, while in the next three terms a wide range of elective courses are offered. The electives are grouped into four areas of specialization: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, and Finance. The choice of electives does not have to be concentrated in one of these areas, so students can decide their own degree of specialization.
In the summer between the first and the second year students are offered a Summer internship at a financial institution, a consultancy firm, a public sector department, or collaborating as a research assistant for a project of a faculty member.
In addition, from the second to the fifth term there is a workshop in which students present and discuss applied economics papers and debate papers on economic policy issues. Throughout the year there is a series of invited lectures and several series of research seminars that students regularly attend.

PhD scholarship in development of bacterial biosensors for food processing
February 1, 2010
Job Description : In the Marie Curie Initial Training Networks, LeanGreenFood, the Laboratory of General and Agricultural Biotechnology of the Agricultural University of Athens seeks a PhD student to develop whole cell bacterial biosensors for food processing. The aim of the LeanGreenFood project is to reduce the chemical treatment in the production of the food and food ingredients by utilizing enzymatic catalysis in the process. The specific objectives of the present PhD study is to develop biosensors for food processing with various transducers: bioluminescence, fluorescence and ice nucleation. Biosensors are used in the food processing industry to monitor the progress and products of enzymatic processing of substrates. They can measure either accumulation of specific enzymatic degradation products or reduction of the initial substrate. Several types of biosensors have been developed, based on biomolecules such as enzymes, antibodies, cell membrane receptor proteins, organelles, or entire cells. Microorganisms are an excellent base for development of biosensors. They offer ability to detect a wide range of chemical substances, they are amenable to genetic modification and several can operate at broad pH and temperature ranges. In spite of their potential, the use of microbial biosensors in monitoring the quality and efficiency of food processing protocols has been limited.
Bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas fluorescens will be genetically modified to express the transducer under the control of bacterial promoters that respond to analytes produced during food processing of substrates with specific enzymes. For bioluminescence, a promoterless lux cassette from Vibrio fischeri will be fused to promoters responding to target analytes during food processing. For fluorescence, the Green Fluorescent protein (GFP) will be used in a similar way. For ice nucleation activity, the transducer will be the inaZ gene, coding for the ice nucleation protein of Pseudomonas syringae. The bioluminescence and fluorescence biosensors will be implemented in fluidic analyzers. The biosensor based on ice nucleation activity will be evaluated with a droplet freezing test for ice nucleation activity and possibly in a specifically developed fluidic analyzer.
Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a Master’s Degree with a background in microbiology and molecular biology. An additional background in food chemistry will be appreciated.
The student is an enthusiastic and innovative researcher with good interpersonal skills and excellent expression in written and oral English. During the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to relevance of background experience.
Due to EU requirements, the candidate cannot have the Greek nationality. Furthermore, candidates that have been in Greece for more than 12 months during the past 3 years cannot be appointed for this PhD position.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the degree programs of AUA.
Salary and appointment terms
We offer a full-time position for a period of one year with possibility of extension to three years. The salary, in line with the EU regulations concerning the Marie Curie Initial Training Networks is € 2590/month.
Place of work
Work will be carried out in the Laboratory of General and Agricultural Microbiology at the AUA. AUA is the leading Greek Agricultural University, training undergraduate and graduate students in Greece in various aspects of agriculture. The University offers various courses, including courses on Food Science and Biotechnology. The Staff of the Laboratory of General and Agricultural Microbiology has experience on biotechnology and the molecular biology of microorganisms. Job Description : We are looking for a PhD student to investigate the effect of high hydrostatic pressures on enzymatic extraction of plant material from agricultural waste streams and selected hydrolytic reactions of carbohydrates in order to reduce consumption of water and energy. The purpose of the project is to optimize the process conditions of pressure and temperature and establish fast analytical methods for quantification of released carbohydrates and oligosaccharides. The PhD project is part of the EU funded programme Marie Curie Initial Training networks, LeanGreenFood and is a joint PhD between Dept. of Food Science, University of Copenhagen and Chemistry Laboratory, Agricultural University of Athens.
The job
The specific objectives of the present PhD study are to establish methods for extraction and modification of plant carbohydrates by using high hydrostatic pressure in combination with specific enzymes and analyse the liberated products by a range of new microfluidic analytical technologies. The study will develop methods for the quantification and differentiation of soluble carbohydrates formed during enzymatic release of pectin polymers or modification of plant starches of various origins based on sequential- and flow-injection fluidic principles and detection by various spectroscopic techniques. The project will focus on high pressure effects on the enzymatic treatment of plant materials to identify the pressure and temperature regions for which the rate of enzyme catalysis is increased without loss of enzymatic activity due to pressure denaturation. The specific task of study is to pressure tune the enzymatic modification of the plant carbohydrates in model systems continuing to a realistic matrix containing interfering substances from the plant material. This comprises quantification of pectic substances, amylose and amylopectin as well as degradation products from the pressure-induced enzymatic treatment of the carbohydrates.

PhD scholarship in generation of biosensors for novel food production technologies
7TH EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK PROGRAM.
LEAN GREEN FOOD PROJECT (MARIE CURIE).
PHD SCHOLARSHIP IN GENERATION OF BIOSENSORS FOR NOVEL FOOD PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES.
In the Marie Curie Initial Training Networks, LeanGreenFood, Biosensores S.L. Valencia Spain seeks a PhD student to develop biosensors for novel food production technologies. The aim of the LeanGreenFood project is to reduce the chemical treatment in the production of the food and food ingredients by utilizing enzymatic catalysis in the process. The specific objectives of the present PhD study are to design and implement biosensors to control and optimize food production processes using specific enzymes. The key enzyme for the food process is bound to a solid substrate in order to increase the life time activity. A sample is
automatically removed from the reaction tank and delivered to the biosensor where the enzyme is retained while other molecules are washed out. A reference aliquot of a specific substrate of the key enzyme is presented to the biosensor to asses the remaining enzymatic activity. The transducer produces a signal proportional to this remaining activity. After measurement, the biosensor is automatically washed out in order to be ready for the next analysis. The developed software for the biosensor gives also a feedback to introduce in the reaction tank an aliquot of fresh key enzyme to maintain optimal conditions for the food processing.
Candidates should have a master’s degree in analytical chemistry with good background in biomolecular and/or biosensor technologies. Programming knowledge will be appreciated.
The student should have a strong interest in automated methods of analysis. The student must be an enthusiastic and innovative researcher with good interpersonal skills and excellent expression in written and oral English. During the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to relevance of background experience.
The chosen candidate will be part of the team of the company, collaborating in its R&D diary activities and objectives of Biosensores SL.
